At this stage over 2 years into the war in Ukraine, does the west expect the $61bn USD aid to enable Ukraine to liberate all of its occupied territory, or just prevent Russia from gaining more? Will it become a frozen conflict along existing lines?
The conflict in Ukraine is essentially a war of attrition, with the Russians aiming to subjugate the Ukrainian population and ultimately eradicate the country itself. This is evident in their abduction of 20,000 Ukrainian children, a clear violation of international law, in an attempt to indoctrinate them against their own nation.
The Russian agenda includes erasing Ukrainian language, history, symbols, religion, and identity. If successful, they would likely resort to widespread violence and mass imprisonment.
Initially, Putin's strategy involved eliminating Ukrainian leadership swiftly, followed by a rapid claim of victory. However, subsequent military actions, such as the failed 40-mile convoy to Kyiv, have not yielded the desired results. Resorting to brutal tactics like the Bucha massacre, Putin's forces have sought to break the spirit of the Ukrainian people. Propaganda efforts have also been employed, painting Ukrainians as Nazis under Jewish command, a baseless accusation only possible through state-controlled media.
Currently, Russia occupies approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory. Putin, realizing the complexities of the situation, now seeks a negotiated peace by proposing to halt the invasion in exchange for retaining the seized land. Ukraine, fully aware of Russia's violations of multiple treaties prohibiting such actions, remains steadfast in their resistance.
The only viable option for Ukrainians is to continue the fight, bolstered by Western support. With sustained aid, Russia's resources will eventually be depleted, forcing a withdrawal. While Russia may never admit defeat in the War in Ukraine, their actions speak louder than words.
