Belgium to Investigate Alleged Russian Interference in European Elections

Belgium's Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, revealed that prosecutors are probing suspected Russian interference in the upcoming European Parliament elections, aiming to sway Ukraine policy. De Croo disclosed that Belgian intelligence uncovered pro-Russia influence networks spanning several European nations, including Belgium.

According to De Croo, Russia allegedly engaged in an influence campaign in the Czech Republic, targeting members of the European Parliament with monetary offers to advocate pro-Russian views. The objective, as per Belgian intelligence, is to bolster the representation of pro-Russian candidates in the European Parliament and propagate a favorable Russian narrative within the institution.

While De Croo refrained from naming specific suspects, he emphasized that despite no direct cash transactions occurring in Belgium, evidence of pro-Russian interference exists. He stressed that weakening European support for Ukraine ultimately serves Russia's interests, highlighting the urgent need for action.

These allegations will be addressed at an upcoming summit of European Union leaders, coinciding with the scheduled Europewide polls slated for June 6-9. The EU has been intensifying its support for Ukraine, including a recent approval of a €50 billion plan over four years, amidst escalating Russian aggression.

De Croo underscored the gravity of Russian attempts to expand influence within EU member states, urging decisive measures at both national and EU levels. He called for urgent action from EuroJust and suggested involving the antifraud office OLAF in prosecuting the case, emphasizing the fundamental right of every citizen to a free and secure vote.
