Germany's top military official, Lieutenant General Carsten Breuer, stated that Russia could potentially be militarily prepared to launch an attack on NATO countries within five to eight years. This forecast is based on the anticipated rebuilding of Russia's forces, which have been depleted due to the Ukraine conflict. Breuer emphasized that he wasn't predicting an attack but acknowledging the possibility.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, relations between Moscow and the West have plummeted, reminiscent of the tensions during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Despite Western concerns, Russia has consistently denied any intention to attack NATO countries. However, President Vladimir Putin warned that Russia would respond to the supply of F-16 fighters to Ukraine by shooting them down.
Among NATO's 32 members, six European nations share borders with Russia: Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. Russia's control over a significant portion of Ukrainian territory, including the annexed Crimea peninsula, demonstrates its increasing influence in the region.
Breuer highlighted Russia's extensive production of military equipment, suggesting a potential threat in the next five to eight years. Ukraine claims an armed force of approximately 800,000, while Putin ordered an increase in Russia's forces to 1.3 million troops by December. Additionally, Russia's defense spending far surpasses that of Ukraine, with a budget of $109 billion allocated for 2024, more than double Ukraine's $43.8 billion target.
