Donald Trump's campaign announced that it raised $50.5 million (AUD$76.7 million) at the fundraiser in Florida yesterday. This amount is significant as the former president's political team works to bridge the financial gap with President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.
The total far surpasses the $39.5 million that Biden collected at a recent event in New York City. The fundraiser in Palm Beach, Florida, hosted by billionaire John Paulson, set a new record for a single fundraising event. Trump campaign senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles expressed confidence in their message, operation, and financial resources to secure victory in the upcoming election. The closed-door event highlighted the support of major GOP donors for Donald Trump as the race against Biden intensifies. Various prominent GOP figures were involved as event co-chairs, including Robert Mercer, Rebekah Mercer, Harold Hamm, Robert Bigelow, and Steve Wynn. The fundraiser offered different contribution levels, with top donors enjoying dinner seating at Trump's table.
However, Trump still has a significant amount of ground to cover in the fundraising race. Yesterday, Biden and the Democratic Party announced an impressive fundraising total of over $136.7 million in March. As they enter April, they have a substantial $291.7 million in available cash. On the other hand, the Trump campaign and the RNC raised a combined $99.6 million in March and closed the month with $141.4 million in cash on hand.
The recent Palm Beach fundraiser was organized to collect funds for the Trump 47 Committee, which includes Trump's campaign, the RNC, and state party committees. Additionally, it also benefited a leadership PAC that supports Trump's personal legal bills. Biden's team has emphasized their early fundraising advantage, which has allowed them to establish a strong campaign infrastructure in crucial battleground states. They have opened over 100 new campaign offices and highlighted their grassroots fundraising operation as a key factor in sustaining the campaign throughout the general election. Notably, 96 percent of their first-quarter donations were under $309, showcasing the support they have received from grassroots donors such as nurses and teachers.
In contrast, Trump has been criticized for focusing on personal pursuits, like awarding himself golf trophies at Mar-a-Lago and associating with billionaires. Jaime Harrison, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, highlighted Biden's dedication to connecting with voters and his vision for economic growth. Democrats are proud to have record-breaking support from grassroots donors who are enthusiastic about reelecting President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats at all levels of government.
