Ukraine's military has faced further setbacks against Putin's advancing forces in the Donbas region, with the recent loss of territory adding to Kyiv's challenges.
In February, Russian forces dealt a significant blow by capturing Avdiivka, a crucial defensive position in eastern Ukraine. Despite efforts by Zelensky's troops to establish new defensive lines west of the city, they were compelled to retreat once again over the weekend, conceding control of villages like Berdychi and Semenivka to Russian forces. Novobakhmutivka, located north of Avdiivka, has also fallen under Putin's control.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi, in a Telegram post, acknowledged the deteriorating situation at the front, recognizing Russia's "tactical successes" in various areas.
Efforts to stabilize the Avdiivka front are underway, with brigades of fresh troops being rushed to the region. Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) anticipate that the influx of Ukrainian forces may compel Putin's generals to reassess their strategy or deploy additional reserves to sustain their gains.
Meanwhile, Russian forces are intensifying their efforts to capture Chasiv Yar, a key Ukrainian stronghold. Securing this city would facilitate broader offensives in Donetsk Oblast, potentially paving the way for attacks on cities like Kramatorsk, which lies south of Kharkiv.
The looming threat of a Russian offensive against Kharkiv has prompted Ukraine to reinforce its defenses in the area, despite facing severe shortages of weapons and manpower along the front lines.
However, there may be a glimmer of hope for Kyiv as the US Congress recently approved a $61 billion military aid package, offering potential relief to Ukraine's embattled armed forces.
