New Sanctions Imposed by US on Iran Following Attack on Israel

The missile and drone programs of Iran have prompted the United States to impose fresh sanctions, amidst growing concerns about the potential for heightened regional conflict.

In a recent announcement, President Joe Biden revealed that the sanctions were directed at key figures and organizations associated with Iran's missile and drone initiatives, which facilitated the attack on Israel on April 13.

Following discussions with G7 leaders, President Biden emphasized the collective commitment to intensify economic pressure on Iran. Additionally, he mentioned that other allies and partners have already implemented or will implement further sanctions and measures to curb Iran's destabilizing military activities.

The missile and drone strikes on Israel were launched by Iran in response to the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. These attacks occurred against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the region, particularly due to Israel's prolonged bombardment of the Gaza Strip, resulting in a significant loss of life and a dire humanitarian situation.

Amidst calls for de-escalation, the Biden administration is under pressure to restrain Israel's response to Iran's aggression, despite Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, vowing to retaliate.

Trita Parsi from the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft in Washington emphasized the importance of President Biden being more explicit and resolute in setting boundaries for Israel and Netanyahu to prevent the escalation of conflict in the region. This comes in light of the recent Iranian attack.

The sanctions imposed on Thursday targeted individuals and entities involved in the production of Iranian drones used in the attack against Israel. Additionally, Washington sanctioned companies supplying materials for steel production in Iran and subsidiaries of an Iranian automaker accused of aiding the IRGC.

The UK also announced sanctions on those connected to Iran's UAV and ballistic missile industries. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that these measures, taken in collaboration with the US, demonstrate a strong condemnation of Iran's actions and aim to limit its ability to disrupt regional stability.

Furthermore, an IRGC official issued a warning on Thursday, threatening to target Israeli nuclear sites and pursue nuclear weapons if Israel attacks Iran's nuclear facilities. Brigadier General Ahmad Haghtalab emphasized Iran's readiness to respond with force if provoked.
