According to reports, US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to have ordered the killing of opposition politician Alexei Navalny at an Arctic prison camp in February.
This assessment is widely accepted within the intelligence community and is supported by various agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the State Department's intelligence unit, as per the Wall Street Journal's sources.
However, it is important to note that Washington has not absolved Putin of overall responsibility for Navalny's death. This is because Navalny had been targeted by Russian authorities for years, imprisoned on politically motivated charges, and previously poisoned with a nerve agent in 2020.
In response to those who claim that Putin was unaware of the situation, Leonid Volkov, a longstanding ally of Navalny, stated that such assertions demonstrate a lack of understanding about how modern-day Russia operates. He described the notion of Putin being uninformed or not approving of Navalny's killing as absurd.
