Russia Criticizes $61 Billion U.S. Aid Package, Warning It Will Worsen Ukraine War and Cause More Destruction
Ukraine was granted a respite following the approval of a $61 billion foreign aid package for Kyiv by the U.S. House of Representatives over the weekend. Russia criticized the new funding, arguing that it exacerbates global crises.
House lawmakers endorsed the aid on Saturday, despite opposition from hardline Republicans. The bill will now move to the Democratic-majority Senate, which is anticipated to pass the legislation later this week before it reaches President Joe Biden for signing.
The aid serves as a crucial support for Ukraine, where forces in the eastern part of the country have been forced to limit their use of shells due to shortages of supplies. Russian forces have been advancing in the Donbas region, prompting Ukraine to request additional air defense systems, artillery, and ammunition to reverse the course of the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to U.S. lawmakers, stating that the House-approved bill "will prevent the war from escalating, save countless lives, and contribute to the strengthening of both our nations." He urged the Senate to swiftly pass the bill.
Russia has strongly condemned the $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, asserting that it will only result in further devastation in the conflict.
