Russia stated on Sunday that U.S. lawmakers' approval of additional support for Ukraine, totaling $60.84 billion, indicated that Washington was becoming more deeply involved in a hybrid war with Russia, a situation they believe will lead to a humiliating outcome for the U.S., comparable to the Vietnam or Afghanistan conflicts. This assertion comes amidst the ongoing tension arising from Russian President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has caused the most severe crisis in Russia-West relations since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, according to Russian and U.S. diplomats.
On Saturday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a $95 billion legislative package, with significant bipartisan support, to provide security assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. However, this decision faced strong opposition from some Republican members.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova remarked that the United States' support for Ukraine signals an intention to engage in a prolonged conflict, including attacks on Russian sovereign territory and civilians. Zakharova stated that "Washington's deeper and deeper immersion in the hybrid war against Russia will turn into such a loud and humiliating fiasco for United States as Vietnam and Afghanistan." She further claimed that the U.S. was compelling ordinary Ukrainians to be used as "cannon fodder," suggesting that the U.S. no longer anticipates a Ukrainian victory against Russia.
Western leaders and Ukrainian officials have portrayed the war in Ukraine as an imperial-style land grab, positioning post-Soviet Russia as one of the major threats to global stability, along with China. However, President Putin frames the conflict as part of a broader struggle against the United States, accusing them of neglecting Russian interests after the 1991 Soviet collapse and conspiring to divide Russia and seize its natural resources.
