Former President Donald Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda held discussions regarding NATO spending during a dinner meeting at Trump Tower in New York City on Wednesday, as per a statement released by the Trump campaign.
The two leaders talked about President Duda's proposal for NATO member countries to increase their defense spending to 3%, as stated by the campaign. Duda had previously urged all NATO nations to raise their defense spending to 3% of GDP, up from the current 2% commitment.
Duda reiterated this proposal to President Joe Biden during a meeting on March 12, emphasizing the need for a higher defense spending percentage due to the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia near NATO's eastern border.
In addition to NATO spending, Trump and Duda also addressed the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East during their lengthy two-and-a-half-hour meeting, as reported by the campaign.
Trump, the expected GOP nominee, has been vocal about his criticism of NATO defense spending. In February, he expressed willingness to allow Russia to act freely against any NATO member country failing to meet defense spending requirements, causing concern among leaders in both Washington and Europe.
European diplomats are reportedly making preparations for the potential return of Trump to the White House, aiming to establish safeguards for NATO and ensure continued support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
