On Tuesday, the UK committed an additional $620 million in fresh military aid for Ukraine, amidst the country's struggle against advancing Russian forces in the war's third year. This aid package includes long-range missiles and four million rounds of ammunition.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak personally assured Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the UK's unwavering support in defending against Russia's aggressive actions. Sunak is set to meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Warsaw to discuss further aid measures for Ukraine.
Ahead of his visit, the UK government disclosed plans to provide £500 million ($620 million, 580 million euros) worth of military supplies, including vehicles, boats, munitions, and ammunition. Notably, the shipment encompasses British Storm Shadow long-range missiles, known for their effectiveness against Russian targets.
Downing Street reported that President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the UK's continued assistance, emphasizing the tangible impact this aid would have for Ukrainian forces on the front lines.
This announcement follows the recent approval by the US House of Representatives of $61 billion in aid for Ukraine, reflecting ongoing international efforts to bolster the embattled ally.
However, it remains unclear when the aid will be available for delivery, raising concerns as ammunition shortages have forced Ukrainian military commanders to ration shells in recent months. These shortages have been exploited by Russia, as evidenced by their advances in Avdiivka and their current approach towards Chasiv Yar in the eastern Donetsk region.
