Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to unveil a historic aid package for Ukraine, amounting to £500 million, during his diplomatic journey to Warsaw and Berlin.
This support comprises 400 vehicles, 1,600 munitions, and 4 million rounds of ammunition, marking a significant escalation in the UK's military assistance to Ukraine. In the fiscal year 2024/25 alone, the UK's contribution will reach £3 billion, totaling £7.6 billion since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
Sunak emphasized the crucial nature of defending Ukraine against Russia's aggression, warning of the broader implications if Putin's ambitions are not curtailed. He stressed the need for immediate support to bolster Ukraine's defense efforts, recognizing their ongoing bravery in the face of adversity.
Defense Secretary Grant Shapps highlighted the importance of this aid in empowering President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people to resist Russian aggression effectively, with the ultimate goal of restoring peace and stability to Europe.
During his visit, Sunak will engage with key counterparts, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, underscoring the collective resolve against Russian aggression.
Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey expressed strong support for the aid package, emphasizing its significance in aiding Ukraine against Putin's illegal invasion.
The aid, drawn from the Treasury reserve, encompasses various resources, including boats, missiles, vehicles, and small arms ammunition, demonstrating the UK's commitment to reinforcing Ukraine's defense capabilities.
