Ukrainian Authorities Report Russian Strikes on Energy Infrastructure Across Three Regions

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko reported that Russia launched attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities across three regions, causing equipment damage and injuring at least one worker. The strikes targeted the Dnipropetrovsk region in central Ukraine, as well as the western regions of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk. DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company, confirmed that its four thermal power stations were among those hit.

In a statement, DTEK expressed grave concern over the extensive damage to its equipment and noted ongoing efforts by energy workers to address the aftermath of the assault. While casualties were acknowledged, specific details were not provided.

The assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure has intensified since March 22, with Russian forces launching near-daily bombardments on thermal and hydropower stations. Ukrainian officials disclosed significant losses, with approximately 80% of thermal generation and 35% of hydropower capacity compromised. The nation's energy grid was already fragile due to a prior Russian air campaign during the initial phase of the conflict in February 2022. Despite favorable spring weather, Ukraine has grappled with electricity shortages, prompting the government to implement scheduled power cuts in various regions and resort to emergency imports.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Governor Serhiy Lysak reported the successful interception of 13 Russian missiles by Ukrainian air defenses. However, the attacks still resulted in damage to energy facilities in Dnipropetrovsk and Kryvyi Rih regions, leading to fires and disruptions in the water supply to the city of Kryvyi Rih.
