In a covert maneuver, the United States clandestinely dispatched long-range ballistic missiles to Ukraine in March, forming part of a comprehensive military assistance package. Utilizing these weapons twice already, according to US sources, Ukraine's arsenal now includes the potent Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), boasting a striking distance of up to 300km (186 miles), nearly doubling the range of previously deployed mid-range ATACMS.
Previous hesitations from Washington, stemming from apprehensions over potential escalations deep into Russian territory, had restrained the provision of such extended-range weaponry to Ukraine. However, a shift occurred in February when US President Joe Biden sanctioned the delivery of these missiles. A substantial quantity was subsequently included in a $300 million aid bundle announced the ensuing month.
Operational secrecy was maintained at Ukraine's request, with no official disclosure regarding the number of ATACMS dispatched. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed ongoing and future deliveries, emphasizing the commitment to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Contrary to Russia's assertions that these deliveries would not alter the conflict's trajectory, the Kremlin expressed concerns about the expanded operational reach of Ukrainian forces. The recent deployment of ATACMS, used to strike strategic targets including an airfield in Crimea and against Russian forces near Berdyansk, underscores Ukraine's resolve to defend its sovereignty.
Admiral Christopher Grady, echoing sentiments from military planners, affirmed that the timing for providing long-range weaponry to Ukraine was opportune. The decision, made by President Biden, was informed by a thorough assessment of current battlefield dynamics.
Russian actions, including the use of North Korean-supplied long-range ballistic missiles against Ukraine, coupled with ongoing targeting of critical infrastructure, influenced the US policy shift. Despite warnings to Russia, its continued aggression underscores the urgency for bolstering Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
The delay in US funding and arms deliveries has allowed Russia to capitalize on its military advantage, intensifying attacks across eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian officials, while not publicly acknowledging the receipt or use of long-range ATACMS, stress the significance of such weaponry in their fight for peace and sovereignty.
